Q: About five weeks ago, I ordered some computer hardware online from an Italian company. To date, this hardware has not been delivered. When I contacted the company, I was assured that the product would be delivered. I am worried because the money was withdrawn from my account. Is there anything I can do?

A: As you ordered the computer hardware online, then your contract with the company will be governed by the Distance Selling Regulations. These provide a 'cooling off period' to enable consumers to cancel the contract by giving notice of cancellation to the supplier. In European countries the cancellation period is at least seven working days and starts from the day after the date of delivery of the goods.

If you did not agree on a specific delivery date, the Distance Selling Regulations provide that goods must be delivered within 30 days. Consequently, if it is now past the agreed delivery date or past the 30 days from your order, then you have the possibility to cancel your order and request full refund of the money you paid.
