Utilty Bills increasing hardships - AD
The excessive price of water and electricity was increasing hardships on Maltese society, AD spokesman for social and economic development Michael Briguglio said.
"Despite government's rhetoric on being close the people, water and electricity bills remain sky-high, causing difficulties to thousands of workers, pensioners, families and small businesses.
"AD reiterates its proposal for government to conduct a scientific study to show the different needs of households and businesses before imposing these unjust utility tariffs.
"Basic use of water and electricity should not be penalised," he said.
AD chairman Arnold Cassola sadi the government was committing one mistake after another on the water and electricity issue.
"The utility prices reveal a lack of social conscience, the recent blackouts reveal a lack of planning, the recent tender on a new turbine at Delimara reveal a lack of environmental consciousness and transparency, and the procrastination on alternative energy reveal a lack of priority-setting."

Can you understand that there is always a minimum consumption whatever your status?
Thank God that you do not need help but others do George.
Perhaps you would reason otherwise if you might need it in future.

The point is not about susidising. Its about introducing the polluters pay principle mechanism.
Basic consumption is a social needs.

"Basic use of water and electricity should not be penalised"
I agree with this concept. And to add insult to injury the Maltese consumer is even penalised for NOT using water and electricity. As an example I own a small garage a few meters away from home. For years this garage has enjoyed W & E. However I am thinking of removing the services or else I would have to fork out Euros 260 per annum just for having the meters inside the garage as consumption is practically negligble. Therefore I and others in the same situation are penalised for NOT using the comodities. When I complained I was informed that it is EU directives as consumption must be charged seperatley from service provision. It is clear that I and other like me are paying for those who consume (or possibly waste).
I thiink this situation should be reviewed. Small garages for private cars should not be treated as business premises. They should fall somewhere in between domestic and commercial. The authorities should be more sensitive.

I do not want to subsidize anybody's consupmtion of water and electriciy!! Low income earners should not be consuming much energy anyhow, or so they want us to beleive.
