Laws and their application were a tool for human life to be respected "from conception to natural death", Bishop Mario Grech said today.

Speaking during Mass on the occasion of Police Day, Mgr Grech said that in society there were a lot of contrasts and people who lacked inspiration lived a disoriented life at risk.

Some preferred to live in darkness because of their wrongdoings but people used to making the wrong choices found it difficult to accept to be illuminated. There were then organisations and systems which preferred to keep people in darkness.

Faced with such reality, society had the duty to provide people with a guide to living a dignified life. This should be offered by the country’s laws of which the police were guardians.

Human life was not drawn up by laws but life was the source of legislation. Laws and their applications were an instrument for human life to be respected from conception to natural death, he said.

Certain irrational choices of today confirmed that with reason alone, there was no guarantee that man would always choose the good over the bad.

The work of the police, Mgr Grech said, was to help society be illuminated and the Lord was a guide and big help.
