A few weeks ago, work started on the refurbishment of St George's Square in Valletta (Il-Main Guard).
As part of the project, the imposing Sette Giugno monument was removed.
This important work of art does not figure in the plans of the refurbished square and we were informed that it would be relocated to the vicinity of the new Parliament building when the plans are finalised.
Many were surprised and disappointed when, on the unveiling of the Piano designs, this monument was conspicuous by its absence.
Many are asking what this omission means. Was it an oversight by those who briefed Renzo Piano on our requirements? Or was it deliberate, and there is no intention of re-erecting the monument in that location?
The Sette Giugno monument, apart from its undoubted artistic merit, is of great historical significance to the Maltese people. I hope it will not be buried in some obscure location or, even worse, left to rot in some store or warehouse.
