St Julians roadworks saga

Regretfully, the mayor of St Julians or a representative of the local council did not have the decency to reply to my letter in which I expressed several concerns that I feel are justified as a Maltese citizen and as a resident of St Elias Street in St Julians (Lack Of Planning In St Julians Works, June 16).

Last week I called the council and once again expressed my frustration about the matter since my concerns had fallen on deaf ears. I also requested the lady who answered my call to ask the mayor to call me at his convenience - again, this request was totally ignored.

It is useless for the government to embark on reforms of the local councils when basic principles of customer service are not being adhered to.

There have been other letters in this newspaper by other angered residents but again these were not enough for the council to take action and realise that the St Julians residents are not happy with the way things are being handled.

The paving of St Elias Street, which our mayor said would be completed by the end of June, is still more or less in the same state it was when I last wrote. To be frank, I cannot understand how this project could be completed so soon when only two workmen are working daily (excluding weekends) on a half-day basis till around 2 p.m. If you want the project completed to minimise inconvenience to the residents, works must be carried out around the clock including at night on a shift basis.

I need not comment on the confusion, dust and health hazards which are still predominant in St Elias Street and surrounding roads.

I respectfully ask the mayor to exercise his obligations and reply publicly to the concerns of residents. We deserve a reply and concrete action.
