The Malta Information Technology Agency is supporting three separate student schemes part of MITA's role in sustaining the ongoing growth of the ICT sector and the growth of the knowledge economy.

One of the most exciting initiatives is the assistance and support being given by MITA to four IT students at the Worldwide Imagine Cup Competition being held in Egypt. LogicArts, the winning team of the local competition, consisting of Brian Fenech, James Abela, Keith Galea and Mauro Pirrone, will be competing against 200,000 other students from over 100 countries. Through their project, the four students have embarked on a brave mission with a genuine objective - to help eradicate world poverty through their charity donation solution called DonationExpress.

Claudio Grech, chairman of MITA said: "These four young men believe that technology can be the driving force that transforms their idea into a real world solution. Their determination to make a difference was what gave MITA the conviction to support their preparation of all the marketing and PR material needed for this intense competition. We are confident that they will make Malta proud."

Through its second student support scheme, MITA will be presenting the Most Enterprising ICT Project Award to students who have completed their final year thesis in an ICT related subject area (including BSc. IT., BSc. Business & Computing, B. Engineering during the academic year 2008-2009) and who have used a creative approach to develop a project which may easily be adaptable to the market, with a potential positive impact on the Maltese ICT industry. The winning student of this award will be given a prize worth €1,000 as a memento of the event.

The third initiative is the Student Placement Programme now running in its fourth consecutive year. This highly successful project gives ICT students at the University of Malta, MCAST and other private training centres the opportunity to put what they have been learning into practice. The initiative also assists local ICT companies to identify those students who show a great deal of skill and potential and who may become valuable assets to their company in the near future.
