Confirming swine flu: swab testing
As the number of cases of A (H1N1) rises fast, a room in the basement of Mater Dei Hospital is buzzing with activity as swabs from patients suspected to be suffering from the virus are processed and fast tracked to the laboratory.
The swabs are taken from the back of the patients' throats after inserting a special cotton bud through the nose.
Christopher Barbara, chairman of the Pathology Department, explains the process from there (see video clip above).

For those of you wondering who are the people doing the testing, please note that these are Medical Laboratory Scientists who form an important part of the health care team. These professionals are never seen and their beneficial work rarely acknowledged. However thanks to the diligent work and expertise of these professionals its possible to issue a diagnosis within the shortest time frame possible. So please when all this is over, let us not forget about the "unsung heroes" of the health professions.
I also would like to thank those GP who are in the forefront of this battle since their prompt action is very important in the fight against this pandemic flu.

The method of testing sounds painful. I'd rather keep quiet at home than have a swab taken through my nose. : )

Is it true that doctors have been given new instructions to test/swab only serious patients?
