Edinburgh airport reopens after package cleared

Edinburgh airport in Scotland resumed operations yesterday after bomb disposal experts cleared the terminal of a suspect package, police said.

"The public are back in the terminal," a police spokesman said.

Edinburgh's one terminal, which handles about 35,000 passengers a day during the summer months, was evacuated for about two-and-the-half hours after the package was discovered in the arrivals area.

Bomb disposal experts did not find any explosives, the police said.

However, flights were disrupted and BAA, which manages Edinburgh airport, said passengers should check the status of their flights.

"BAA security staff are currently re-screening evacuated passengers, and BAA is working hard to ensure a return to normal operations as quickly as possible," it said in a statement.

"Passengers due to fly out of Edinburgh Airport this evening should expect some disruption to normal flight schedules."
