Between 2004 and June 2009 there were 66 cases of rape or attempted rape arraigned in courts. Sentences handed down ranged from conditional discharge and/or probation for a number of years to effective or suspended jail terms.
Answering a parliamentary question by Labour MP Silvio Parnis, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said that a total of 10 effective sentences of jail terms had been handed down, and eight suspended sentences. There were still 37 cases pending.
In the Magistrates' Court in Gozo, five persons were charged in three separate cases (one case with three accused and two cases with one accused each). All these cases were first arraigned in 2008 and are still pending.
