Updated: Isle of MTV set to be MTV's biggest concert this year
The Isle of MTV Concert in Floriana next Wednesday will be a huge event and the biggest MTV concert this year, Jane Frazer, an MTV executive producer, said this afternoon.
Some 200 workers are currently assembling the stage which will feature Metrostation, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Esmee Denters.
The show, the third to be held in Malta, will be broadcast across Europe in September and is also expected to be screened in Asia and South America.
Peter Portelli, Permanent Secretary, Tourism and Sustainable Development, urged those who planned to attend to use public transport .
He said that the event had attracted considerable interest in Malta.
Ms Frazer said that now that the concert has established itself as one of the major annual events for MTV, interest was being shown by all its worldwide networks to air the concert as well as other live programmes related to the Isle of MTV concert.

@ Joe Galea
Working on your analysis.......not even to the beach :)
At the Isle of MTV there won't be just a CROWD but a HUGE MULTI-GENERATIONAL AND MULTI-CULTURAL CROWD that, definitely, you won't find in our churches, supermarkets etc......and on our places of work. I am not panicking - I am just using my common sense!

@ S Anastasi and all those who are panicking: So according to you no MTV concert as there will be a crowd. Therefore, this implies that closure of supermarkets, churches, and other public gathering places, should commence too. They should also close all palces of work....mmmm that will be agood idea, i would go the beach instead.!!

It seems that the authorities are playing the blind, deaf and dumb game. So, if anyone of you want to attend the Isle of MTV concert, just do it, at your own risk, through sheer egoism!
I only pity the workers at 'il-fosos', the bus and van drivers, the policemen, the staff at the Medical posts at the granaries and all others who will have to report on duty there, whether they like it or not, those who have no other choice because of selfish and stubborn heads!!!!
Let's hope and pray that after 'The Isle of MTV' is over, Malta won't be labelled as 'The Isle of Swine Flu''!!!

I respect your opinion even though I don't agree for reasons I mentioned before ...BTW am not attending as I'll be in london, reported to be a swine flu hot spot by sky news...shall I cancel my trip for fear of contracting swine flu? of course not.

The activities you mentioned are all essential and necessary to LIVE a NORMAL life as you say. But the concert does not fall into this category. I know that it is impossible to cancel such a huge event due to the financial aspect but those who will be attending are putting themselves at risk of becoming potential victims. We have just learnt that 15 new cases have been reported which shows how fast this virus is spreading. All I'm saying is that we can prevent this virus from spreading by playing our small part. the less infected persons the less the spread of the virus. BTW Good for you for not attending the concert for whatever reason.

cancelling a crowd event will not solve that problem... allura nobody should go shopping any groceries, clothes or anything else, attend mass, go to the hairdresser's, go to work and a million of other things cos the virus spreads very quickly in these circumstances.... life has to go on as normal as poss. ...bdw...i am no promoter of this event and am not even attending myself but i can't stand all this fuss and panic ghalxejn!!!

Very true, we all must die one day, why not now?.
Enjoy the Isle of MTV guys, me, as a young adult, mostly prone to be hit by the flu according to medical reports (between 20 and 40 i think it was), am not going, but everyone has the right to do what they want to of course, we're in a free country. Some people smoke, some people take drugs, others even don't mind assuming exotic types of flu viruses. Not my case though, no thanks.

If im not mistaken the Health authorities, including top Health officials, suggested that people should avoid crowded places.......
Few days later the same officials said that it's fine to go at MTV concert........
i suggest these officials to have a look at footage of previous MTV concerts.....if you don't call that a crowd......i invite these officials to tell me what a crowd is!!!?!?!?

@ Tania Farrugia
'all persons who died from swine flu had underying medical problems....these people with underlying medical issues are those who need to pay the UTMOST attention of course'
That's precisely my point. What if you get the flu and you pass it on to an unsuspecting co worker or shopper who has an underlying medical problem? If we can avoid becoming another case why not try? If we all take precautions we can beat this thing and pprevent it from spreading. In maltese we have a saying Min imur hdejn in nar jinharaq.

@ J. Micallef
Did you know that most people have recovered from the disease without going so far as touching Tamiflu. This drug is not a life saviour and in fact was not even designed to tackle swine flu. Also, every kind of flu mutates and becomes resistant to medicine, but this does not mean we are all going to die of flu does it? After all, if this were the case we would lose half our population every winter.

Why all this panic????!!!! We all have to die one day. Stop being paranoid people and go on with your lives.

Some people just see up to the tip of their nose! Incredible! As if being in a crowd does not mean being in close proximity to nostrils and mouths - from where the flu can be easily transmitted! Who said that it is nothing more than a cold!?!?! A cold that can kill maybe? Aren't these people aware that there have been cases abroad of resistance to tamiflu already!? What if these STRONG and MACHO people transmit the flu to a family member like a baby or an old person - who are most in danger from the virus! This is not paranoia this is cautiousness!

@v.pulis it's not something to take with a pinch of salt of course (never said that myself and neither did the others).....imma mhux naghmlu dan l-ghageb kollu!!!!!! we have to take the necessary precautions and immediately refer to professional advice when and if infected with the virus...we also know that we have adequate supplies of Tamiflu ....I follow all the main news reports including sky and bbc...it has been reported that all persons who died from swine flu had underying medical problems....these people with underlying medical issues are those who need to pay the UTMOST attention of course.....u ma jersqux lejn postijiet crowded u kemm jista jkun joqghodu d dar....imma mhux the rest of the population....qisha gejja l-pesta barra minn fuqna!!!!!!!!!

@T.Farrugia Grazio Vella Adrian Cardona Michael Vella Don't you think you are being irresponsible and immature when you down play the risk of contacting the flu? You may be strong enough to resist it but what guarantee can you give that if infected you do not pass it on to someone who is not strong enough to fight it? You may unknowingly kill that person.

Some people are just plain paranoid. As if you know who your co-workers or other family members met and where those people where before meeting them. It's just a flu with the only difference being they know where the hell it originated from. You could walk out and get run over by a drunk driver too. Does that mean you stay at home all the time? If you're so concerned about it then don't go to work, don't go shopping, don't go ANYWHERE until this whole thing is exterminated from planet earth!

Another Isle of MTV... another festival without Metal / Rock acts epic fail you want a real festival? check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfDZbHGr7BA proud to be a yearly goer to this festival, which I shall be going to again in 3 weeks rather than useless mainstream artists that focus more on superficiality than music (which is generally rubbish)

Given that Malta is densely populated unlike Spain Given that many tourists/youngsters will be ariving in Malta due to it Given that people are by nature careless/negligent Then I deduce L.Galea was right in a comment he left in another swine flu article- "Next week will be hundreds, the week after thousands." Let's just hope there will be enough Tamiflu and Relenza for everyone and that no single Maltese citizen dies

After the Isle of MTV we can call Malta The Isle of the Swine Flu! It should be cancelled or at least postponed...there is no way that there will be no transfer of this Flu next wednesday! I was looking forward to go but i decided it is better for me and the ones around me not to go to a high risk place!
Alessandro Aquilina
Jul 6th 2009, 17:56
What about the swine flu ????? Is there any precautions ????? I bet that after the concert, there will be much more infected due to the quantity of people that will attend. The authorities are only looking forward for their income and not for the people's health. We are a small island, and its a matter of Chain Reaction, and we will all be infected.
