160 foreigners found by ETC working without permit
Between January and May 2009, Employment and Training Corporation officials found a total of 160 foreigners working in Malta without permits, Social Policy Minister John Dalli told Parliament in reply to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Carmelo Abela. Half of the foreigners were of EU origin and the other half non-EU. There were 52 in January, 29 in February, 28 in March, 19 in April and 32 in May.

This low number is proof of the lousy job Minister Dalli's office is doing.

@Louise Vella 'I invite the inspectors of ETC to walk with their eyes open and they will see many more foreigners working without a permit.' If you're in the Police or another recognised authority you might be authorised to check and demand, so why haven't you done your job? If you aren't authorised, how do you know if a person has a permit or not?

louise vella I agree with you. If they do they will find thousands who are all takng the Maltese workers of their work and family bread. Those found working illegal should be deported forthwith.

@ B Crocker:
Seems like you're posting the wrong comment on the wrong blog.
Title reads:
"160 foreigners found by ETC working without permit"
Last part reads " WITHOUT PERMIT" .... this is what the article is about. It's not a fact of who works where - which in turns, shows your great appretiation towards Maltese ppl. *Sighs*. If you have a working permit - you can work in Malta. and If I have all correct papers I guess I can work in the UK. This is called legal democracy.

@bcrocker
please note that we are talking about illegal work here. as maltese we welcome EU 'foreigners' to work in our islands when done in a legal manner, as it means they have been given the goahead to do so, the same as done in the uk.
@pace, lawton & pollard
i am sure ms. pace probably is/has worked in a restaurant or hotel, just as i did and is not exactly happy seeing her maltese coworkers fired or dismissed, because often illegals are happy to work for what is the minimum wage/under the minimum wage, while maltese know what is fair and what are their rights! she might have reported it and was snubbed or is to afraid to report it because she is afraid of loosing her own work. and i am sure she is not referring only to guest houses or just to any tiny, shabby restaurant.

And what happens when the ETC finds foreign persons working illegally in the country? How much is the employer fined? Were the non EU citizens deported?
Unless we take good and proper action against illegal employment we cannot expect to see any real results. The Government needs all the funds it can get, and cracking down on illegal employment is one way to ensure a more substantial income in our coffers.

I hope that the Maltese do not think of going to the UK and working there and taking British Nationals jobs. You see it works both ways you do not want foreigners working in Malta so you should not work in any other country

@ Jamie Pace:
Dear Jamie... following this quite weird comment from your side, I have 3 questions to ask you pls:
quote:
"has your job been taken?....if not,then keep quite and let them work"
Questions:
1 - Do you have kids that just finished school / University or Courses and are looking for a job?
2 - Do you employ or have any commissions on the employment of ppl without work permit - especially foreigners??
3 - If both of the above questions are answered as NO, then can u tell why Louise Vella shouldn't be able to shout out loud one of her concerns? Like many other Jobless persons will do?
It's funny how 160 persons that are taking our co-National's jobs can contribute so much for our economy when 3 days ago one can read that the total unemployment is at 7,266!!!
http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20090703/local/jobless-increase
PS - Jamie, I have a very good job, but I also care for others ( Maltese ) that might have all the requirements to work but have their places taken by a bunch of foreigners working without permit.

@ Jamie Pace
How can they be working illegally and paying taxes? Those that work illegally do not pay taxes and therefore do not add to the economy. If anything , they take the jobs of those who would otherwise have worked legally and paid their taxes.
Also note that some of them may be claiming a daily allowance as they are not officially working. can't see how that would add to the economy.

@ loiuse vella....if you so much care, u can assit the minister by going out yourself to those building sites and hotel kitchens like you did mentioned and investigate or interview those people u believe re working without permits and find out if they do ve one......I see no reason why you re crying out loud ....has your job been taken?....if not,then keep quite and let them work....they work and pay taxes,which adds to the economy...and hence keeps them away from trouble...

Louise ,please remember EU nationals are legally entitled to live and work in Malta, and receive basic medical treatment, etc.

Louise - how can you tell if they do or do not have a permit just by looking at them?

I invite the inspectors of ETC to walk with their eyes open and they will see many more foreigners working without a permit. I also invite them to go and inspect some building sites and some kitchens of hotels and restaurants.
