Traffic fines issued to foreigners
In reply to the letter by Charles Jenssen from The Netherlands (Tourist Information And Traffic Fines, July 1), if you rent a car/motor vehicle anywhere in the world you are responsible for traffic fines etc.
A work colleague of mine was issued with a speeding ticket in the US on the way to the airport for his return journey to the UK. He did not pay the fine, however the next time he went to the US he was refused entry and deported for non-payment of the fine. He offered to pay there and then but this was not allowed.

In many other countries fines for traffic offenses such as over speeding are automatically deducted from the car owner's account by a devise which one has to have attached to his car. The bank will later inform you of this deduction.

Yes Great thanks Mr.Hof. this is exactly what we need in Malta, it will cut down the number of accidents and people showing of their mobile disco, or heated or tuned up chilopy, then maybe we shall see LESS monuments on our narrow roads especially on the coast roads, where i hear that some are even thinking of setting up stalls to sell flowers the families for the unfortunates who had accidents in that dangerous area of Malta. Holland has the right idea why can't we adopt this system, it will cost the government but that's why we pay our high taxes for isn't for our citizens and our safety and now that our children at home for the summer season. Any thoughts on this subject anyone?

Very true now we are all in the EEC all these fines can be traced from one country to another and its exactly the same with the Banks, every bank in the eu when opening a new account know everyone's personal details to a certain extent for security reason, so who said Big Bro. is not with us., take the UK as an example cameras everywhere, i know for a fact that in the Netherlands there are hundreds of UNMARKED police vehicles equiped with all kinds of high tech. radios, cameras and cctv's you name it they got it all, and when a driver breaks the speeding or acting in suspisious way whilst on public roads they are pulled in in a matter of minutes and fined accordingly sometimes if its more serious/over the limit or driving without insurance or a driving licence, the car is confiscated and made to either walk or get someone to pick them up and made to pay through the nose. so there you have it my friends in Malta >Look>Listen and learn from others, its for your own safety as well as mine when in Malta.

In Australia if you are fined and don't pay, you're traced and the bill is sent to your home address. Of course you will then have to pay interest! If you don't pay - there are the debt collectors!
