Labour network or the opposite?

In my letter to The Times of June 16, I challenged Salvu Felice Pace to name Labour supporters who were appointed chairmen or members of boards or authorities, and even of Labour supporters who were given appointments in government service during Nationalist administrations. These were requested after Mr Felice Pace alleged that Labour supporters formed a network in government service to favour Labour supporters and caused Nationalist supporters to moan against "their" government.

According to Mr Felice Pace this was one of the reasons why the PN lost the European Parliamentary election. Probably Mr Felice Pace is still compiling the list of Labour supporters appointed, and of the alleged such Labour network created in government service. No list has as yet been provided by Mr Felice Pace.

Instead, to his rescue came Edgar Gatt of Swieqi (June 30) and instead of stating whether he agrees to Mr Salvu Felice Pace's statement, and filling half a page with names of such Labour supporters, he only mentions Vincent Moran who was a member of the Malta Maritime Authority. He mentioned also my lack of knowledge of current affairs. To my knowledge Dr Moran is not and has not been a member of this Authority for these last couple of years.

He acknowledged that Dr Moran was a very respected member. I have not the least doubt about that, and even dare say that Dr Moran is not only a most respectable person, but categorically state that he was the best Minister of Health we ever had in our Maltese political history. During his tenure as Minister, we had no waiting lists for operations at St Luke's Hospital.

Maybe this Nationalist government should have used Dr Moran's ability and experience to help reduce the present scandalous operations waiting lists at the Mater Dei Hospital.

@J.Vella. But you conveniently forgot that in 1996-1998, Dr. Alfred Sant broke that tradition, and left many PN led boards and did not change anything. Only once was he forced to change a Permanent Secretary. Remember the Golden Handshake of J. R. Grima worth over Lm40,000 because he was found not up to the job politically speaking!
Joe Vella (on 6/7/09)
@ P. Schembri Thanks for reminding us all, specialy your friends, the messengers of Gloom and Doom, that previos MLP/PL Governments did the same thing. @ PH Zammit The margin of Victory is immaterial. What I found strange though is that you even had the indecency to mention it to make some sort of a point. I guess you have a very short memory, Well let me remind you that the between 1981 and 1987 we had a Government that the majority of Maltese rejected and continue to govern against their will. You might want to be reminded as well that the margin of votes was much more then 1500.
Joe Vella (on 6/7/09)
@ Ph Zammit The government is elected by the people to implement it's Electoral Programme and not that of the opposition. And as such, the Government is right to appoint individuals to Boards, Commissions and the like to ensure that its' electoral Programm is implemented.
Ph.Zammit (on 6/7/09)
Well said Angelo . @ Joe Vella: Who says that the Government has every RIGHT to appoint people of the same political persuasion - you? You ignore the fact that a government is for everyone, more so in the case where the government was snatched with just 1500 votes, Mr.Vella!

How dare our friend from Zejtun categorically state that Censu Moran was the best Minister of Health we ever had in our Maltese political history. Does he not know of the late Dr. Albert Hyzler who was the best health minister Malta ever had. Bertu Hyzler was a patriot who in 1958 was sent to prison by the Colonial Government. I suggest that a memorial for Dr. Albert Hyzler be erected.

Angelo would you pls tell us how many Dockyard Nationalists workers were taken on loan with the Labour Govt and promoted to Head of Depts over the heads of many other senior workers.
P. Schembri (on 6/7/09)
@J/ Vella. Look who's talking about crocodile tears! Haven't you forgot when the PL was in government, and the same happened? Or is it a case of two weights and two measures?
Joe Vella (on 6/7/09)
The Government of the day had every right to appoint individuals of the same political persuasion to Boards, Commissions and the like to ensure that the Government' policies and initiatives are implemented.

In no way that I am suggesting that in Malta we should adopt the USA system. Perhaps, it comes to a surprise to Angelo Zahra and Emanuel Farrugia, to find out that once a new Administration is elected in the USA that the whole civil servant tender its' resignation and the new Administration appoints its' nominees. Some have to go through Senate Confirmation while many thousands do not.

So. please no more Crocodile tears.
Emanuel Farrugia (on 6/7/09)
Mr. Angelo Zahra, I read your letter of the 16th. June and I also read the post made by Edgar Gatt of Swieqi (30th June ) and I thought one should refrain from comments and shut up once Edgar Gatt had discovered that ONE Labour supporter had been appointed a member of the Board of the Malta Maritime Authority, and maybe after all, Salvu Felice Pace was right in stating that as the reason why the PN lost the European Parliamentary election.

Now I realise how pathetic the mentality of this Edgar Gatt and people like him is when he came out larger than life with this discovery which reminded me of somebody looking for a needle in a haystack. I also wonder where he did his research to uncover such a juicy bit of information, whether it was at the National Library or the archives at Pieta. PN apologists will got to any length to save their PN faces and even look ridiculous like Edgar Gatt. In the event that a list does come out, I will tender an apology to Edgar Gatt in anticipation.
