Hungary ran up a big trade surplus in April, but down slightly from the figure the previous month as exports fell more sharply than imports, data from the central statistics office KSH showed.

The April trade surplus stood at €430.3 million, down from €502.6 million in March, which had been the country's biggest surplus for a decade, KSH said in a statement.

Exports were down by 10 per cent month-on-month at €4.661 billion, while imports declined by 9.5 per cent to €4.231 billion, the statisticians calculated.

In April 2008, the trade surplus had amounted to €48.9 million. Taking the first four months of 2009 as a whole, the trade surplus totalled €1.049 billion, up from €331 million in the corresponding period of 2008.
