Former Test prop Mark O'Meley has been released from the final year of his Australian National Rugby League contract with the Sydney Roosters to join English Super League club Hull FC in 2010. O'Meley, 28, has signed a three-year deal with Hull FC and will play alongside Roosters team-mate Craig Fitzgibbon, who announced his departure in May.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson will stay in charge for the 2009-10 season, he said as he ended speculation about his future. Jackson, who collected a record 10th championship ring when the Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 4-1 in last month's NBA final, made the decision after having several medical tests. Jackson, who will turn 64 in September, has had both hips replaced and underwent an angioplasty procedure in 2003 to open a clogged artery in his heart.

Tiger Woods played the role of inhospitable host by soaring to the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the AT&T National in Maryland, on Friday. The world number one, who is hosting the $6 million event at the Congressional Country Club, fired a four-under-par 66 to finish on 10-under 130, one stroke ahead of Australian Rod Pampling (64).

Basketball

The father of NBA All-Star Kobe Bryant has been named as the new coach of Sebastiani Rieti, the Italian team said. Joe Bryant, who played for Rieti in 1984 and 1985, most recently trained Japan's Tokyo Apache. Rieti finished 13th in the Italian top flight last season.
