Chelsea: Chelsea made their second transfer swoop in two days when they signed Manchester City striker Daniel Sturridge on a free yesterday. The 19-year-old scored four times in 26 appearances last season and was voted City's young player of the year. Former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull became new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti's first signing on Thursday.

Wichniarek: Former Poland striker Artur Wichniarek has signed a two-year contract with Hertha Berlin. Hertha paid a reported €1 million transfer fee to relegated side Arminia Bielefeld for Wichniarek, 32, who scored 88 Bundesliga goals for Bielefeld in 207 matches from 2000 to 2003 and 2006 to 2009.

Ribery: Bayern Munich's star midfielder Franck Ribery admitted yesterday he wants to leave the Bundesliga giants for Real Madrid while the Germans are insisting he will stay. "I have decided: I want to leave," the 26-year-old midfielder told L'Equipe. "It will be Real or nothing at all."

Catania: Catania attacking midfielder Nicolae Dica has joined Greeks Iraklis on loan, the club said yesterday. The Romania international, who only joined from Steaua Bucharest a year ago, had a disappointing season in Sicily, making just three Serie A appearances.

Makelele: Paris SG skipper Claude Makelele confirmed yesterday that he has extended his contract with the French first division side until 2010. "Staying on in Paris was my aim at the end of last season," explained the 36-year-old former French international midfielder.

Medal stolen: Argentina's 1978 World Cup goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol had his winner's medal stolen when thieves broke into his Buenos Aires home. "They said to me 'If there's no money we'll kill you'," Fillol said after Wednesday night's incident. "They turned over the whole house looking for more money and took several trophies and the World Cup medal," said Fillol, who trains the national team goalkeepers under coach Diego Maradona.
