Rise in price of petrol 'too steep'
The 15c increase in the price of petrol was exorbitant and the steepest since the price began fluctuating according to international movements, the Labour Party said.
Labour said the rise increased the burden on households and industry, adding that the government had not learnt a lesson from the European Parliament and local council elections. Instead, it continued to ignore the plight of families already fighting record inflation.
It said petrol was 21 per cent and diesel 14 per cent higher than in Cyprus and asked what had become of the government's intentions to bring the prices of diesel and kerosene at a par to deter abuse.

@ M Gauci
A lot of talk and nothing said. Everyone looks for a cheaper price, it is part of the competitivity machine. Mentioning the past is not solving the present or future.
There is evidence that prices worldwide are lower then before, how does it account that here in Malta we have to accept a raise in fuel? It is all part of the Goverment manuever to collect money to run its politics.
Read Tonio Fenech's lips ... " Those that consume have to pay more" - a joke right?
Everyone consumes something - 'la massa' which means everyone will be contributing for the expense of budgets. Where else can Mr.Fenech turn to? Only us. You and me.

@Nigel Lawrence..most Malttese are show-offs..therefore they will buy the most powerful of SUVs which as you say are fuel guzzlers and not environment-friendly. So Labour is shedding tears for these people who don't give a damn about the environment or about how much fuel they buy..They can afford it - if they are prepared to spend Eur1 000 a year on petrol they will not mind paying Eur 1 150; the important thing for these characters is showing off their BMW X5 or X3, or their Tuaregs or Pajeros or whatever, and going round Malta on Sundays.

The problem is the fact that while international prices are going down (even further this week), local prices are rising, and at a galloping rate!!!!

Malta Labour Party or the kiddies party make me laugh - when they order something from abroad and the price fluctuates - do they cry fowl to their suppliers ?
When Labourites (the gullable lot) order anything (from medical equipment to a mobile) from the Internet or whatever - do they cry fowl at the supplier when suddenly the prices goes up ?
Is the Enemalta petrolium division still a monopoly ? Labour prophets and scaremongers, moaners and cry fowlers surely can start importing high quality fuel and sell it to us at cool cheap prices, can't they ?
Of course they can't - and they will not when in government either. We have a perfect quite recent example of when they were in government 96-98 (two years of horrific mismanagement and kicking the population real hard with cruel taxes). The funny side of it, the gullables who now are trumpeting Joe Muscat's tune, back then, reasoned that the cruel taxes were needed because of the "infamous hofra". Back to present times...these people are seeing the devil. How's that for credibility ?

If the Maltese are falling over themselves to obtain big gas guzzling SUV's, then enemalta are simply taking advantage of people who don't give a damn' about the price of fuel. As for the others, how many do you see driving round the corner to pick up their newspapers. Generally, the Maltese are slaves to their cars. If they have the courage to boycott the pumps for a couple of months, the price of fuel will plummet
