31,200 tons of bulky waste deposited at amenity sites

A civil amenity site was inaugurated today at Tal-Kus, near Xewkija in Gozo.

The site is the fifth and last such facility to be opened in Malta and Gozo.

Resources Minister George Pullicino said the sites served an important purpose for the collection of separated bulky waste. He said that dumping in the countryside in Gozo was now expected to be reduced. Up to some time ago, there was a culture where one dumped waste wherever he wished, the minister said. The government remained committed to further development of efficient waste collection services.

The site was developed with EU funding and covers an area of 2,400 sq metres.

The other civic amenity sites are at Maghtab, Mriehel, Luqa and Hal Far. All are managed by WastServ.

Company chairman Ben Farrugia said at today's inauguration that ever since the first site was opened, 31,200 tons of bulky waste had been collected.
