Two new artificial turf pitches at St Edward's College

St Edward's College students play football on the new artificial turf pitches.

Last Friday, St Edward's College inaugurated two new artificial turf pitches. The new pitches, installed by 389 Ltd, meet current FIFA standards.

What made the event most remarkable is the fact that all funds to cover the expenses were raised by the boys themselves, who worked hard to find multiple sponsors for this year's walk which took place along the Victoria Lines.

Peter Fenech, vice-president of the Malta FA and an old Edwardian himself, cut the ribbon to officially mark the opening of the celebrations.

The College chaplain, Fr Keith Bonnici, blessed the pitches before Julian Ellul and Andrew Marshall, the two students who collected the most money for the sponsored walk, were given the honour of being the first boys to kick a ball into the nets.

The highlight of the day occurred when the teachers played a game against the Year 11 boys. It was a close match but in the second half, stamina proved to be the decisive factor as the boys emerged 12-10 winners.

Next year, St Edward's College aims to install a 200m oval rubber circuit which will surround a multipurpose turf pitch.
