If the illegal immigrants were not allowed to be here the employers would not have been able to employ them, so yes, they are to blame for Maltese workers losing their jobs.
And illegal immigrants include all those who have overstayed their visa from wherever they came.

........contd from prev The government has to do all it can to help unemployed people and help does not always have to be financial but also in the form of training,which the ETC provides free of charge to unemployed people. The concept of Lifelong learning and the importance of continuous self development is paramount in keeping ourselves more employable in this fast changing world we as citizens especially in a country where Human resources are our only resources have to do our part as well .

Mr Michael Seychell made some very valid points. When mentioning illegal immigrants taking jobs etc etc ,it seems that all too often we point fingers to the illegal immigrants from Africa while a look around us would surely reveal that there are other illegal immigrants taking jobs of the maltese,e.g eastern block citizens ,asians etc etc. Also there are instances that foreigners e.g Bulgarians/Romanians etc are paid legally the minimum yet its good money for sending back home.The maltese then cannot be bothered to do the same job for the same money.so This automatically raises another issue do jobless have the right to choose the job of their liking?Can beggars be choosers?How many people are abusing the system and why does this happen.Im against abuse but lets be honest here a person living on relief can he really sustain a family,pay bills etc etc,maybe more should be done in that sense......contd

To All - Reading most of the comments one concludes that the main culprits targeted are the Illegal immigrants; the E.U; and the Goverment.

How about saying that although we are a very small Island we are part of a global economy which is in the most ever deep recession. It is a fact that we were not hit as bad as many other countries with huge economies when compared to Malta, but we are now feeling the pinch even more.

It is expected that now that we have hit by the 'swine flu' things will most probably get even worse as tourism will have another blow.

Regarding immigrants why do we find it so difficult to put the blame on those employing immigrants and apying them less than peanuts - and these are not only business people but also those of us who may have a couple of days work to whitewash/paint our houses, or to do any other odd job.

I feel certain that many people are getting richer and fatter on the backs of the 'niggers' - ask the trade unions.

Let us hope that we will soon reach the bottom to start moving up!

If you are right in what you are saying, then the government should see that ALL those registering are IMMEDIATELY sent to do these jobs, while checking that they are paid according to Maltese laws. ANYBODY refusing to do these jobs should be immediately struck off the unemployment register. Is that what you are implying?

Before you complain that there are no jobs around, read the other story today where Gatt comments about why it is difficult to improve infrastructure,

T>Gauci i suppose its the same in England with immigrants so i suppose the British come first then ofcourse as you rightly say immigrants takeing most jobes so i guess its not only us in Malta we got our Matese brothers in the same situation abroad. Its a catch 22 all wround eh!

Maltese workers will do all jobs provided they are reasonably paid and with good working conditions.
The illegal immigrants are stealing Maltese workers jobs because they undercut and destroy the working conditions of Maltese workers because illegal immigrants have free lodgings, food, water, electricity, telephone and cards, internet etc.
This is certainly not a level playing field.

The first thing that needs to be done is to get rid of all illegal immigrants who are stealing Maltese workers jobs apart from costing us more than an arm and a leg to keep them here when they have absolutely NO right to be here in the first place.

the government need to start doing something to stop things getting worse..it is their job to make sure things get better..it is their job to start helping people back to work and to start helping small business get through these times..everything starts and stops with the government of the country..bad management on the part of the p.n. is a large part of the problem

By account for i hear from my family in Aussie and also in the UK that some Maltese are being made unemployed in these countries as well as Malta, its naturally due to the bad times we are going through so its expected news and things will get worse before getting better.

People were told the E.U. and more so the euro currency , would have brought
more jobs AND more visitors from EuroLand.
What it has done is to have " Bruxelles Big Box " AND Frankfurt's
European Central Bank , breathing down Malta's neck.
Had Central Bank of Malta been free to manage its affairs
with it's own Malta Lira , ignorant me thinks that , especially with recession ,
probably more visitors ( especially from the UK ) and global enterprise would
have been attracted to Malta.
Malta did not fair badly breaking from sterling , I don't see why the euro was
seen as salvation. It certainly has not brought down the main think that interests
people....Cost of living.

The NSO said that there are 6,501 unemployed in Malta............. == to the same number of illegal immigrants that remains here. So in reality our figure should be roughly 12,000 unemployed and this figure is set to rise!!
Ah! and some time ago we learned that there were almost 1,000 refugees working legally here.....what a stark contradiction. The Maltese unemployed and foreigners who came illegally were legalised by our system and are stealing Maltese jobs!! Unbelievable.
