A young Spaniard was yesterday conditionally discharged with a warning after he admitted to being in possession of a joint (cannabis cigarette) on Monday.

The 21-year-old English language student, Guillermo Martinez, was caught with the drug when he was stopped by the police in St Julians. He appeared in court yesterday clutching some comic magazines and dressed to match his Rastafarian hairstyle, in shorts and a dark green T-shirt.

Legal aid lawyer Patrick Valentino told the court his client had fully cooperated with the police and that he had a clean police record.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna conditionally discharged Mr Martinez for six months and warned him that if he were to commit another crime in Malta within that period he would be punished for both crimes.

Police Inspector Dennis Theuma prosecuted.
