With the advent of (hopefully) a bustling holiday July and August, I take this opportunity to ask local councils to address the following with the urgency it requires so as to avoid potential accidents:

All pedestrian crossings, stop and give-way signs at junctions (including roundabouts) need to be painted with better quality paint. And some sleeping policemen need to be added to accident-prone areas. Where I live, there averages at least one accident every week or 10 days at the junction of Manuel Dimech Street and St Mary's Street in Sliema. And vehicles (especially motorcycles at the weekend) appear to use this road as a grand prix circuit well into the early morning hours.

I am sure most readers could add to this list with ease.

Tourists, driving hired cars, are possibly more at risk as they certainly will not anticipate unmarked pedestrian crossings and road markings.

Should this letter be totally ignored by those who have the authority to take action, I for one will remind them of it, in the event of a tragedy occurring.
