Union says tender conditions encourages exploitation
The GWU has slammed the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts for laying down that security services for the Jazz Festival cannot cost more than €6 per hour, saying such conditions promoted workers' exploitation.
The condition was contained in a call for tenders issued by the council and includes tax.
The union said such conditions made it impossible for security firms to employ full timers with normal conditions of work. This, therefore, encouraged precarious, part-time employment or the engagement of workers with inferior working conditions.
The union urged the minister concerned to withdraw the call for tender.

Finally the security staff found a union that has their well being at heart. I was employed with a security firm for the past two years, like most security companies the employment is on a part-time basis, with a wage of euro 3.85 per hour. Such companies employ staff on part-time basis, but when people are engaged the roster consists more than forty(40) hours per week, no overtime no bonuses etc etc.
