The International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) has honoured and awarded an official of the Malta Maritime Authority with the 'Distinguished' prize in an international essay competition.

Ivan Gatt, Flag and Port State Inspector at the MMA, submitted an essay entitled 'Global Warming and Port' on the importance of controlling ship emissions through speed and other operational measures.

It was an open essay contest for those employed by IAPH members, young and old. A total of 46 entries were submitted from 24 IAPH members in 21 countries.

The winners of the 'Distinguished' award will receive a cash prize of US$500.

The essay contest was organised by IAPH last year, in celebration of the 26th IAPH World Ports Conference in Genoa, Italy, held last May.
