A laboratory is to be set up at the University's Department of Industrial Electrical Power Conversion to improve Malta's electrical energy research and development potential. The project is part-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013.

The laboratory will be used by the department's undergraduate students and researchers to design and develop power converstion prototypes, and conduct research on energy conversion from renewable energy sources (RES) such as solar and wind; the simulation and analysis of the interaction of RES with Malta's electrical network; the improved usage of traditional energy sources; the increase of electrical energy efficiency in domestic and industrial applications and the improvement of power quality.
