French world champion Sebastien Loeb crashed after hitting a tree stump on the opening day of the Rally of Poland yesterday, handing the lead to his rival Mikko Hirvonen.

Loeb, driving a Citroen, halted after the first kilometre of yesterday's third stage set in the northern part of Poland known for its picturesque lakes.

Loeb's team would examine the damage to his car and decide whether he could resume racing today, officials said.
