Bay Mobile bowing out of telephony scene
Bay Mobile is bowing out of the mobile telephony scene on July 4, less than a year after entering the market.
Owned by the Eden Leisure Group, Bay Mobile was launched in September last year. it had a single tariff for its calls, not differentiating between peak and off-peak hours.
Eden Leisure Group CEO Simon de Cesare said Bay Mobile had now partnered with Melita Mobile to support its customers after negotiating the “best deal and value for money” for its subscribers.
Melita Mobile will offer customers a free mobile phone, a free month of usage, including calls, video calls and messages to all local networks and free mobile internet access.
Once the month is up, customers will continue to enjoy a flat call rate of 10c per call to all Melita Mobile and fixed line numbers up to April 2010 and will not have any time windows to top up.
Mr De Cesare said none of the Bay Mobile staff will lose their job within the group of companies.

Why am I not at all surprised ? I was among the unlucky bunch of new clients of Bay Mobile- in simpler words; one of those who got nothing but dismal service from the company- along with a writing pad and pink pen to make the situation seem more pleasant. Prior to consulting a Bay Mobile Rep at the University of Malta Freshers week, I decided I should indeed change over from Vodafone to Bay, due to much cheaper offers and fancy tarrifs. Not only did I not benefit from the offers because of unclear advertising and information, but I was stuck with no mobile line for over 4 weeks. Despite my many attempts to speak to customer reps, who were totally incompetent and unsupportive, I got no solutions to my mobile problems, often having to resort to using someone else's mobile phone to do as much as send a text message.. On a more positive note, Vodafone Reps were so much more supportive throughout my change over, and I have never had anything to complain about. Oh, and they also work after 5 pm- Bay seemed to forget that mobile problems can arise after this hour.

Poor showing after less than a year....
I was quite happy when new companies were introduced to the mobile telephony market; however on closer examination it was still the same old story; basically the same rip-off rates and very little benefit/freedom to call numbers not affiliated with certain networks.
Its nothing short of collusion, the same which goes on in the ISP market and many many others. Pathetic.

This goes to proove that when the MCA compares retail prices of mobile telephony in Malta to retail price of mobile telephony in Europe, it is doing a comparison between the uncomparable, only to fuel a negative sentiment by the general public against mobile operators. Everyone has to accept that the Maltese marlet is what it is, a markey which much less than half a million possible clients, whereby the high fixed costs of having a network in Malta have to be distributed amongst a very small subscriber base by European standards. It would be far better for MCA to see that any new operator basis its application on a sound business case, to avoid having a repitition of such an event, which at the end of the day reduces market players, and thus market competition!

The Maltese market is so small that now it cannot afford any more mobile companies.
