Walking on stones at sandy Golden Bay
I fully concur with Shaldon Micallef's letter Għajn Tuffieha Slowly Losing Its Beach (June 11).
Another beautiful sandy beach which seems to have been abandoned is Golden Bay. Surely, the name is misleading. I took my daughter from Canada with some other friends over to Golden Bay and we could not believe our eyes when we saw the state of the sandy water's edge. It was full of rocks of a million different sizes. Tourists of all ages were struggling to walk over these obstacles, some falling over while the young were helping the old to thread on these sharp stones. It made me feel ashamed and disgusted!
Why do we have to leave our prime tourist attractions in such a state? Where is the minister responsible? Why not send 50 immigrants (who are going crazy doing nothing), give them the tools and trucks and send them first thing in the morning, as the cock crows, to clear all the stones and seaweed from Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa?
This lackadaisical attitude will not do! A video film of people, young and old, coming out of the water, threading on these stones, looks like people coming out of a bomb site and not a golden sandy beach. Action please, not words!

@ Albert Farrugia Would you wish a bucket, say the word and I will pass you one :) The illegal immigrants are living off our taxes, which I am paying almost half of my wage in taxes and national insurance. Can't they do anything except live off our backs? What is unbelievable is people like yourself's wish to wrap them in cotton wool and expect us to lay out the red carpet!

@Albert Farrugia.
Farrugia concentrated on Mr. Pace's reference to a solution tramite the use of illegal immigrants. I agree, that is a silly suggestion! These people are not slaves, though they definitely are invaders. Even so, they do have rights.
The 1% who somehow manage to qualify for refugee status are to be considered as worthy of protection and hospitality. The other 99% who can never obtain refugee status are also humans and they too have rights.
In all practicality, these 99% are nothing more than criminal invaders and they are in reality used like slaves - by the building industry, the street cleaning service and hundreds of small businesses operators all over Malta and Gozo.
Mr. Pace's suggestion deserves consideration in the sense that these 99% should be treated for what they are. Who knows, they may even prefer doing temporary community work for a living rather than having to risk life and limb day-in-day-out slaving on some construction site or running like mules behind some scavenging truck emptying rubbish bins. Mr. Farrugia may then solve his chronic state of stomach sickness. He may also enjoy a day at Ghajn Tuffieha beach!

This is incredible!
I quote: "Why not send 50 immigrants (who are going crazy doing nothing), give them the tools and trucks and send them first thing in the morning, as the cock crows, to clear all the stones and seaweed from Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa?"
Is Mr Pace implying these humans are our slaves? Perhaps this same Mr Pace on other occasions complains that these immigrants are coming to take over the jobs of our fellow Maltese!
Who is this Mr Pace to think that he has a supply of slaves at his disposal to clear his beach? And also at the required time early in the morning!
Each day more than the other, the mentality in my country is making me sick.

Ramla beach in Gozo is in the same pitiful state. This winter's heavy showers have created a deep trench across the beach, full of pebbles and rocks. To my knowledge, the Xagħra local coucil is trying to bring in a sand sifter to remove the pebbles (and God knows what other litter). It seems that the environmental organisation responsible for the beach is not helping the matter as they argue such action would damage the beach. In a few years time we'll end up with Ċagħka Beach!

The reality is that such former lovely beaches / bays / coves, etc, are allowed to deteriorate to the stage where tourists are just not interested in visiting such places ( the word goes around ). Tourism ? pah !!! we do not want foreigners coming here and telling us about our failings do we, if they do not like it here, then they can take their money somewhere else !!!
But, hold on, they can always spend their time looking at bland, characterless, unwanted, unfinished, unecessary, and vacant, properties and apartments. After all, there are 53,000 + of them, and still building !!!
