Too slow to refund cancellation fees

Due to a recently diagnosed very serious health problem, we have had to cancel our flights with Air Malta to the UK in July. I can accept the €25 cancellation fee. However I understand we do not get the taxes refunded and I would ask why. But more...

Due to a recently diagnosed very serious health problem, we have had to cancel our flights with Air Malta to the UK in July.

I can accept the €25 cancellation fee. However I understand we do not get the taxes refunded and I would ask why. But more importantly, why on earth do we have to wait eight to 10 weeks for the remainder of the money to be refunded. We had to pay when we booked the flights - Air Malta would not wait eight to 10 weeks for our payment. I would be very interested to receive an explanation.
