A new charter airline, Efly, is to be based in Malta. It will operate its aircraft on both inclusive charters as well as on a wet-lease basis on behalf of other operators. Luigi Crispino, who has been involved in a number of start-ups over the years, decided to set up base in Malta after becoming aware of Malta's great potential in the aviation sphere.

The Efly project was launched in January and a group of professionals headed by Mr Crispino have been working incessantly to formally launch the company. The first aircraft, a British Aerospace 146-300 has already arrived in Malta.

The aircraft belongs to a Maltese leasing company called Aircraft Leasing Management which has already bought a second aircraft which Efly will shortly add to its active fleet. The ALM company belongs to the Crispino family and a number of outside investors. It is an asset management company which is also open to other investors.

The Malta based airline has already got a contract in hand to operate on behalf of a well known Italian airline based in Bologna. Mr Crispino is waiting for the final certification papers to formally launch all flights. Efly is actively planning further expansion to its aviation activities in Malta, a company statement said.

The company has already been certified to carry out maintenance (JAR-145) on its own aircraft and will also offer its technical services to other operators. Efly is actively seeking Maltese personnel to employ at all levels and has already recruited Frans Camilleri, Air Malta's former Corporate Group Head Strategic Planning to be its account manager.

Mr Camilleri is considered to be one of the leading aviation analysts in Malta and has worked on a number of projects at Air Malta including the latest fleet renewal programme which started way back in 2002.

Discussions are also taking place with Mcast with the aim of eventually employing to 30 students in the maintenance sector. Efly intends to intensify its relationship with Medavia and is already using the company's hangars to service its own aircraft.
