Obituary

BURRIDGE. On June 22, IVAN JAMES LANGFORD, aged 80, passed away peacefully at Mater Dei Hospital, comforted by the rites of Holy Church and with his wife Josephine at his side, after a long illness bravely and patiently endured. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his loss his brother Kenelm and his wife Anna, his brother William, his stepchildren Jeremy and his wife Georgina Jackson-Styner and their children, Mandy and her husband James Wedge and their children, his nephew Julian and his wife Robin and their children, his niece Kirsten and her children, his niece Jill and her husband George Attard and their children, his brothers and sister-in-law, his many cousins, friends and colleagues. The funeral service will be held tomorrow at 2.30 p.m. at the Nazzarenu parish church, Sliema, followed by interment in the family grave at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. The family wish to thank all the staff at Casa Antonia, Balzan, for their great care and attention over a long period. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

EU photography competition

Photographers from all EU countries are being invited to take part in a photo competition to mark the European Year of Creativity and Innovation.

The competition - Imagine A New World - is one of initiatives organised by the European Commission with the aim of shaping competitiveness by fostering the creative and innovative potential of Europeans.

The competition is open to both amateur and professional photo-graphers living in EU countries, candidate countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Exhibition on Hospital voluntary work

The various roles carried out by volunteers in numerous areas of the hospital are the subject of an exhibition being held at the Mater Dei Hospital foyer.

The VolServ Volunteer Corner exhibition will be open until Tuesday between 8.30 a.m. and noon and between 3 and 6 p.m. It will not be open on the weekend or public holiday.

VolServ was set up in 2007 by SOS Malta to develop and organise voluntary services at the hospital and in the community.

Card party

A card games party in aid of the Little Sisters of the Poor will take place at the SAS Radisson Hotel, St George's Bay, on July 1 from 10 a.m. A private bus will leave Sta Luċia at 9 a.m. For bookings call Blanche Martin on 2133 0387 immediately.

Tours of wine estate

With summer around the corner and the vines showing healthy signs of budding, Marsovin is offering guided tours of the Marnisi Estate in Marsaxlokk.

The Marnisi Estate was the first in the series of estates specifically intended for the production of premium quality wines. It is spread across 73.2 tumoli of land and is planted with over 50,000 vines, consisting of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot.

Literature competition

A literature competition is being organised by the Youth Parliamentary Secretariat and the National Book Council to promote writing for adolescents.

Entries, which should be in Maltese, must appeal to youths between 12 and 17 years of age and not be less than 20,000 words but not more than 25,000.

Participants may submit up to three works and must sign with a nom de plume. They must declare they have never been published in whole or in part.

Manuscripts must reach the council's secretary at the Public Library, Floriana, by November 11.

Volunteer work

The Ignatian Youth Network is offering 10 individuals aged between 18 and 30 the opportunity to do volunteer work for six or 12 months in Chile, Egypt, Ethiopia, India and Kenya.

An information meeting will be held on Friday between 4 and 6 p.m. at Dar Manwel Magri, Msida (opposite Mireva bookshop) for all those interested.

Operation Delphis

Nature Trust, the environmental organisation, is urging marine enthusiasts who own a boat to join it on Operation Delphis, an information gathering exercise on marine mammals and biodiversity.
