Trees stolen from Karl Chircop Garden
The Sta Lucija council has condemned the theft of trees from Karl Chircop Garden in Dawret it-Torri.
In a statement the council said this was a shameful act which ignored the significance of this garden and hurt the sentiments of many. The trees were found missing yesterday.
The council said there were many ways how one could get trees even with the council's assistance and such a cowardly and criminal act was unnecessary.
The Labour Party in a statement condemned the incident.

I am proud of being from Malta but not of being part of its people! Sorry to say! And not just for the stolen trees, bins, flowers, solar panels and all the other stuff! Not proud of being part of this people because of the general mentality regarding our own country. Few natives appreciate our own homeland. We should think of what we can give to Malta not the other way round. Really disappointed for the lack of progress in this matter. And yes Malta should be surveilled by security cameras. Il-poplu ta' dawn iz-zewg blatiet mhux ta' min jafdah la fid-deher ahseb u ara fil-mohbi.

I agree with Adriana Chircop and would like to add that some idiots may have stolen the trees but they can never take away Karl from our hearts and our minds !

maybe the wardens can do less hiding behind corners, poles and blind corners to poach drivers and instead start concentrating on vandals and vandalism as well??!?
they would be giving a better service to their fellow countrymen,,, isntead of finding ways how to fleece them.

You are right, but you have to catch these people red handed.

Did anyone visit 'GnienBormla' recently? Trees, benches & bins stolen, lightning & decorations vandalised and so on...... CCTV cameras & heavy penalties might reduce these vandal events.

The only way these thefts will stop is if people get real jail sentences and make them pay for their stay in hail. I read these news everyday and it seems everybody gets a suspended jail sentence ( even for stabbing ). So, if you were the low life that stole these trees, would you worry about getting caught?

CCTV's should be installed at public areas, just as long as it is not used to spy on us.
That is, to watch the tape there would need to be an open investigation in the area and a signature by the Chief Police commissioner.

Parliament does not acknowledge what each and every Maltese know for sacrosanct fact. Arson and vandalism are extremely serious problems that justify extreme measures. Such measures should include amendments and new legislation in the sense that:
(1) Courts CAN NO LONGER argue, present or/and consider any mitigating circumstances of any kind (social, physiological, psychological etc) during the relative procedures;
(2) Vandalism and arson be considered as malicious damage and carry extremely severe punitive sentences, accompanied by confiscation in favour of the victim or state of present and future property;
(3) The suspended sentence statute will be barred from sentencing for such crimes;
(4) Attempted vandalism and attempted arson be held to be sufficient for the prosecution to establish a specific intent to cause damage to property and danger to life;
(5) A new specialized Police branch should be introduced with the specific intention of fighting vandalism and arson.

Don't worry too much about material things in life. The perpetrators of this crime, if not tried by a court in Malta, will be tried by the court of God. If they believe He exists at all!!! Our deeds are all judged by the supreme judge of all.

As a friend of Karl I am saddened and disappointed at this news. As a local councilor in Santa Lucija and on behalf of all the Council and executive and administrative officers, I am simply outraged! Santa Lucija Local Council is committed to creating a greener cleaner environment and anyone in need of trees could have simply asked. Resorting to vandalism and desecration of a site in memory of a respected departed MP is simply wrong. The perpetrator\s have with this very action offended all those who worked so hard to create this memorial garden for Karl. The trees will be replaced but your cowardly disrespectful act will not be forgotten!

And I can bet the the perpetrator is not some poor old chap with empty pockets. He is probably one of the well off 'business' people who has a nice cozy garden with a pond, a pool, an expensive car and a full bank account!

Their feelings of guilt and shame should tear them apart.They are out of balance.I call it the aspect of shame humility.
Do they know where they belong? Do they ?

Vandalism and petty theft seems to be increasing and becoming more common in Malta.
CCTV camera's and increased surviellance seems to be the only economically viable answer to this.
I often wonder what is taught in the schools in Malta nowadays, regarding respect for others and respect for public property, and also road safety and road manners, as well as first aid, good behaviour and honesty?
What sort of education do the kids in Malta get on these important issues - or is it a just a case of 'these are not included in the subjects taught' in our schools?

Unfortunately we have always been like this in Malta, that's why our streets and roads were always so barren. But i do agree with all regarding the CCTV. However I would 'reward' very heavy fines to the criminals, whilst naming and shaming them, maybe one day people will learn the lesson.

Don’t the perpetrators realize that they would eventually have to pay for new trees through taxes? Indeed, it is above all an act of ignorance...

f'hiex wasalna! statues, bins from Ghadira, now this! oh my, what a shame. have we arrived to this now?????? yes, cctv cameras could be a solution, but i guess perpetrators would eventually get around to stealing those too!

What an act of ignorance! not even a sense of respect to a defunct person. Needless to say its time to put on some CCTVs everywhere....this country is no longer inhabited by sane people. A few weeks ago the garden of Romano at St Venera had been vandalised too. Oh my...

Maybe the perpetrator needed to finish off his live sized crib, first the statues stolen from the cribs in roundabouts, now this. Incredible !
