A Somali woman, Hodan Yusuuf Omar, 23, today pleaded guilty in court to seriously injuring Habiba Abdi Naur, another Somali woman, when she stabbed her at Hal Far open centre on June 9.

Ms Yusuuf Omar was handed a two-year jail term suspended for four years.

During the court proceedings the woman apologised for her actions.

She will be leaving Malta in the beginning of July for resettlement in France.

MsYusuuf had said she had been sleeping in a public garden with her one year old daughter because her residence term at the open centre had expired.

But Alex Tortell, director of the Organisation for the Integration and Welfare of Asylum Seekers later clarified that she had been asked to leave Hal Far open centre after stabbing another woman.
