PM discusses migration, education and tourism in Lithuania

Prime Minister Lawrece Gonzi discussed illegal immigration and bilateral cooperation in education, tourism and trade when he had a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius in Vilnius today.

Dr Gonzi said after the meeting that illegal immigration was discussed in the context of a pilot project agreed by EU heads of government last week on the repatriation of migrants enjoying humanitarian status.

Dr Gonzi said Mr Kubilius acknowledged Malta's problems, not least because in 2007 Lithuania took a small number of migrants from Malta.

The two leaders also agreed that there were grounds for increased cooperation in culture and the arts.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg had talks with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Vygaudas Usackas.

The Maltese delegation also toured the University of Vilnius.

Dr Gonzi is also to visit Sweden, which will hold the presidency of the EU for the coming six months, and Estonia.

It couldn't be that the prime minister of Malta and the foreign minister went to Lithuania to talk about illegal immigration in Malta. We are no children to believe anything the authorities want us to believe. The real purpose of the trip is something else otherwise it is a waste of time and resources. Perhaps there is something to learn from Lithuania. The trip to Sweden is understood because the Swedish Prime Minister will chair the E.U. next after the Czeck and it is well to be briefed on Maltese matters.
