After the successful introduction of the cake decorating course, the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce is organising another course during summer. The nine-week course starts in mid-July and will cover the baking of birthday cakes and making sugar flowers and Christmas cakes.

The society is also holding a course with artist Eman Grima on portrait and figure painting and drawing. Applicants can attend either the morning course, to be held on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and noon, or the evening course every Thursday between 5.30 and 7.30 p.m. The course will run over nine two-hour sessions and will start in mid-July. Early booking is recommended.

An introductory course in Egg Art will also be held. This is an art form that is relatively new to Malta. Students will be introduced to different types of egg art and egg shells. Students will be shown how to empty egg shells, mark them accurately and cut them in different styles to create various projects.

Two courses on floral art, one on church flowers, will be held for advanced students. Courses start in mid-July for nine consecutive weeks and will be conducted by Nadine Micallef Grimaud. The church flowers course will take place every Wednesday between 8.30 and 11.30 a.m. and that on floral art every Thursday between 5.30 and 7.30 p.m.

A beginners' course in woodcarving will start on July 18. The aim is to enable students to embark on their own woodcarving projects with a helping hand from the tutor. Tuition will be given in row relief and simple carving in the round. The course will also include learning how to recognise various timbers and their selection and carving properties as well as looking at the different types of tools required.

It will run for nine weekly Saturday sessions, between 8.30 and 11.30 a.m. Tools are to be provided by the student while wood can either be provided by the student or by the society at a cost.

More information on the courses and application forms may be obtained from the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce at Palazzo de La Salle, 219 Republic Street, Valletta, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., by calling 2124 4339 or 2124 4400, e-mailing info@artsmalta.org or visiting www.artsmalta.org.
