Migrants in open centres were aware that their residence agreement lasted between a year and 16 months, the Home Affairs Ministry said yesterday.

Reacting to media reports that migrants were being made to live on the streets, the ministry said open centres were a tool to help those out of detention with temporary residence. It insisted it was important for those in open centres to understand the need to find employment or to move on to other countries.

The beds were also needed for new migrants leaving detention centres.

"This system stands in stark contrast to that employed in other countries where those leaving detention centres have no assistance and no place to go," the ministry added.
