It was heartening to read Alfred Camilleri's letter protesting about the shop fronts of Valletta (The Sunday Times, June 7).

Ray Bondin has written about this several times too, but the mutilation of Valletta's beautiful buildings goes on regardless.

As a mere 'foreigner' I feel strongly about the erosion of the city's architectural heritage and wonder what, if anything, the Valletta council plans to do about it, or if they or anyone, but a handful of us, care enough to bring a halt to this.

One might well ask who gives the green light for planning permission for these alterations. I have been told that there are rules pertaining to the renovation and alteration of shop fronts. Foreign retail outlets (and some local ones) should be asked to respect the buildings' existing fabric.

May common sense prevail before any more harm is done.
