PL acknowledges Dahrendorf's 'positive' role in Malta education reforms
The Labour Party today saluted the memory of Ralf Dahrendorf, the German sociologist who resisted Dom Mintoff's student-worker education reforms in the late 1970s.
Prof Dahrendorf died on Wednesday, aged 80.
"Dahrendorf was a great friend of Malta. He was involved in the complex issue of higher education in our country, in which he played a positive role which needs to be re-evaluated in the historical context of the time," the PL said.
The PL also praised Dahrendorf's role in the German Maltese Circle, which, it said, contributed to the appreciation of German culture at a time of major German investment in Malta.

student-worker education reforms in the late 1970s:
Just to let you know that in the UK apprenticeships and company sponsorships which are similar to student-worker scheme are becoming very popular. We shouldn't spit on Mintoff for everything. He created mess but also some very good things, and this was one of them. It created solid, responsible citizens.

Yes and today we have a magical PILL that will solve all our educational problems, yes shut down the trade schools,, good move by all the experts in our educational system, lets shut down all the JUNIOR Lyceums ,, so the GOOD APPLES CAN MIX WITH THE BAD.

I have never agreed with Dom Mintoffs ways of doing politics,, but time has proven us all wrong,, this country had nothing when he come to power, but by jove what this man achived was a MIRACLE.
It is people like Dahrendorf that helped Malta on its way to greatness, and then in the 80s we have the PN that use to go toEUROPE crying and saying that they should not invest here, DOM gave us free education, whenever you like it or not he is the man that wanted the working class people and there kids to have a chance in life and he knew that this was only achived through EDUCATION thank you thank you.
Well done DOM we may not all like you but you are truly the FATHER of MALTA.

Is Mr Dahendorf the same person who Dom MIntoff said that he was "persona non grata". If in the affirmative should this PL apologize or not?

Hearing Ayatollah Khamenei speaking about the sanctity of the Iran elections and the infallibility of the state at the same time blaming western powers for fomenting unrest is eerily like an echo from the Mintoff days. The ideology is the same.
