A Maltese diplomatic office was opened today in Ramallah in the Palestinian West Bank. An embassy will also be opened tomorrow in Tel Aviv.

Both initiatives are being held jointly with Cyprus.

Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, who inaugurated the Malta office this morning, said this was an important step towards fulfilling the objective of increasing the number of representations abroad so as to offer better services to Maltese living overseas.

He augured that the opening of the Representation in Ramallah would further strengthen bilateral relations. Dr Borg said the Government of Malta has decided that the Palestinian Territories should feature as a priority area for Malta's Overseas Development Policy.

The Maltese Diplomatic Representation in Ramallah is headed by Alan Bugeja.

Dr Borg held meetings with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki, the Minister of Economy, Basem Khoury and Home Affairs Minister Said Abu Ali.

He also laid a wreath laid a wreath at the tomb of Yasser Arafat (picture).
