Rockestra - unique concert for the Community Chest Fund
A concert that will merge rock with the classical sounds of a philharmonic orchestra will be held to raise funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund on September 12.
The event was launched by President George Abela and his wife Margaret, chairman of the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Mrs Abela said the Malta Community Chest Fund was seeking to reach as many people as possible in order to be more effective in its work.
She said that Rockestra, as the concert has been called, will be held in collaboration with the National Philharmonic Orchestra at Ta' Qali fairs and convention centre, with assistance from the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.
The orchestra will play pieces by Queen, The Beach Boys, Eagles, Led Zepplin, The Beatles and Deep Purple.
Also taking part will be The Riffs and Scream Daisy's Jotham.
The programme will see a mixture of rock and classical music with the participation of sopranos Maria Abela and Claire Caruana, Alex Bezzina, Raquela Dalli Gonzi, Neville Refalo, Daniel Cauchi, composer Ruben Zahra, Fakawi and DJ Owen.
There will also be a light show by Ross Ashton's High Power Projections.
Entrance will be against a donation of €10 for the Malta Community Chest Fund. Booking opens on Monday on www.rockestra.org, the Embassy Shopping Complex and, later, other venues.

Will this event be similar to the Vienna Philharmonic Rock Orchestra Project, featuring similar numbers, same sound and light design, same orchestrations and numbers? If this is a guaranteed similar show, that it is worth watching? And since music is going to be performed mainly by the Malta Phiharmonic Orchestra, it would been more appropriate that a representative from the orchestra board would have been present at the top table in this press conference (as they would normally insist to be on!)

As a rock music historian, I would be very much interested to know which are the titles of the songs by the named groups?
Why was no David Bowie song selected?
Any correct and exact information?
I would expect 'Bohemian Rhapsody' , 'God Only Knows', ' Hotel California', 'Stairway To Heaven', ' A Day In The Life' and 'Smoke On The Water' to be in the repertoire, but there are other songs of course!
Re Bowie. He is more related to Malta than the mentioned bands and groups, as he was here in July/August in 1969 (40 years ago, exactly!). It would have been fitting if the 'board' included 'Heroes/Space Oddity'.
And also what about Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd etc.
I think that the inclusion of the local bands is very much unappropriate as this does not gell with the main item. Discordant maybe!

Did we really need two ministers book ending the President and Mrs Abela just to announce a fund raising activity?
