When one remembers the noise and pollution that the old Mil helicopters used to make, one cannot understand why we are so frightened to allow a small landing strip for the use of smaller and more modern commuter aircraft to be built, facilitating access to Gozo.
This would also give a much-needed lifeline to the flagging tourism industry on this island. Modern aircraft, especially when compared to the old helicopters, pollute the environment minimally in terms of both noise and air.
For the past 10 years or so we have done nothing but talk about the upgrade of Qawra Point, the golf courses, the Gozo air terminal and 1,000 other projects. Everything remains in the pipeline and all we seem to do is talk when "time" is not just passing us by but is already gone.
Have we forgotten that the number of tourists we require to make a "good season" is an insignificant percentage of the world tourism market especially compared with other major destinations and, therefore, we should surely have been recession proof?
Could this be because all we do is talk?
