The traffic in Malta is very much hindered by the number of speed cameras that have now mushroomed all over the island and drivers are being trapped continuously by the ridiculous maximum speed of 60/50 kph and faced with a €70 fine.
The main reason behind the setting of such a low speed is not the safety on our roads but it is a purely business affair. Most of the money raised goes to the contractor that installs the cameras; only a little going to the council and to the transport authority. Drivers are ripped off €70 every time and this is a disgrace for the present Administration. Traffic moves normally until approaching a speed camera where it slows down as if approaching a bottleneck; time and energy are lost and pollution adds to the congestion.
The present government must be sensitive in this regard and should raise the speed limit to 80kph.
Many who drive on our roads today are easily trapped and harshly penalised and this reflected itself in a loss of votes for those held responsible.
