BirdLife reports trapping in 60 areas
Wild birds are attracted into a cage trap by food, water and decoy birds and are then unable to find their way out. These illegal traps require little maintenance but are extremely effective at catching wild birds, BirdLife Malta says. Photo: Nadja Tschovikov
Bird trapping was recorded in 60 localities this year despite a ban on the practice.
BirdLife Malta said it witnessed 90 incidents where trappers were present, with more than half taking place during the peak finch migration period.
In 76 other incidents, trappers were not present but although the birds were recovered, only one of them survived. The others died of long exposure to the sun or starvation, it said. The organisation said it also found 25 active cage traps and three mist nets, both of which were already illegal before this year's ban.
Four cage traps were dismantled by the police.
BirdLife campaign coordinator Geoffrey Saliba said: "The majority of trappers seem to be respecting the ban, but for populations of these target species to slowly build up we need time and effective law enforcement."
Otherwise, he said, the target species trying to breed would continue to be illegally trapped.

FRANZ BUHAGIAR
FKNK were present at the protest. Yet the organizers or the reporters present made it a point not to mention it.
Not having noticed their presence only means you were not there.

@ Francis Buhagiar
It seems that YOU weren't at the protest held yesterday at Bahrija. FKNK was there.

@Francis Buhagar
There were FKNK representatives at the protest! Due recognition was paid to these in yesterday’s flash report of the occasion. http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20090618/local/march-against-controversial-bahrija-development
Today’s article went without any mention.

This is the latest in sensational news coming out of BirdLife’s arsenal about:
- The incredible vacuum effect of clap nets, sucking all birds in the area!
- Unattended nets (nets spread flat hugging the ground) entangling many birds and one ‘lucky’ blue rock thrush!
- Mist nets while illegal for common mortals, are the preferred tools of bird ringers as BirdLife! Perhaps those found unattended were left there by some one or other in their mist?
- So now not only chaffinches are breading here, but it seems that Buskett has been their stronghold for ages!
- So what’s the point of more time to establish a haven for birds to do more breading?
- And the usual final jab at the low police numbers (a.k.a. tax payer’s money) required for the job!

The article refers to trapping during the peak finch migration season which occurs in March.
Have Birdlife run out of news!
Reporting these alleged abuses in mid June might be a reminder to the public that Birdlife are still in existence. It certainly shows the news value of such nonsense.

Dear birdlife Malta, were where you yesterday during the protest at Bahrija? What is the use of protecting the birds while helping those like Victor Scerri destroying their natural environment where birds are suppose to nest. Or is it a ball that birds are nesting in Malta? Were where the Hunters and trappers federation in this protest?
Shame on you both.
Frans Buhagiar.

"BirdLife campaign coordinator Geoffrey Saliba said: "The majority of trappers seem to be respecting the ban, but for populations of these target species to slowly build up we need time and effective law enforcement."
@ Geaffrey Saliba, Trappers, like hunters are forced to respect the ban, whether they like it or not. The majority respect the law as they always did during the past seasons.
"Otherwise, he said, the target species trying to breed would continue to be illegally trapped."
Again Mr Saliba, because you know that birdlife failed, you're trying to misinform the public that birds will not breed unless a total trapping is completely stopped, however you failed to mention other important factors why such birds cannot breed on our little island such as, density, climate, noise pollution, light pollution, and water. Mr Saliba the public expectations over the millions that BLM always claimed are high, were nothing but BLM fantasies.

Birdlife has been challenged many times to publish accounts of all the money they receive from all sources and their employees wages/salaries but it did not.
Why did it not do so?
What is it hiding?

And what happened to the 175,000 Euro EU grant, that was approved by a Government ministry intended for a campaign to inform trappers about the harm to biodiversity?
If Birdlifw can give a detailed account of how this money is being spent we would indeed be grateful.
So far only a few provocative billboards are all they can account for!!!
As for the picture accompanying this article, proof of Birdlife statement that "Several birds were recovered from these unattended nets where they had become entangled." does not consist of a picture of empty cages. These cages are as empty as their allegation of entangled birds.
