I would like to congratulate the new mayor and councillors of the San Ġwann council. They have a hard task ahead of them because what was achieved by the previous PN councils was almost demolished and subverted these last three years.
The local residents had become accustomed to have their streets swept regularly and they kept them clean. These last three years they went back to the old system of throwing rubbish everywhere. Why? Because their streets were not swept for weeks on end and nobody seemed to care anymore.
The gardens and green areas were not watered in summer and young trees and bushes died as a consequence. The cart ruts were completely abandoned as well as the Kappara area, which forms an integral part of San Ġwann. The newsletter was never regular, written in bad Maltese and left a lot to be desired.
I am not saying that nothing was done but it seemed that only Renè Savona Ventura and a couple of the PN councillors got themselves really involved in trying to improve things, as was very evident at the lack of attendance of the other councillors at the last locality meeting.
The new council must check the works contracts and take drastic measures where there was gross negligence. And the residents must once again take an interest, cooperate and help to improve the general situation in our locality.
