With reference to the letter by Grace Zerafa entitled New Taxes On Persons With Disability (June 17) allow me to clarify a couple of points.
First, there is no doubt that the Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Investment understands and appreciates the concerns expressed by Ms Zerafa. Indeed, prior to the introduction of the new car registration system, the government consulted a number of bodies, including the National Commission Persons with Disability with a view to ensure that persons who were previously granted special concessions were not negatively affected.
Secondly, it is important to note that while the new system does not create additional financial burdens, the NCPD has asked the ministry to hold a meeting to explain the effects of the system and to look into any special circumstance that might adversely affect any of its members.
This public meeting was held on June 5 and its outcome is now being discussed together with the NCPD so that any further enhancements that could better the lives of the persons with disability and their families are looked into.
