PL congratulated for EP results
The Malta Labour Party delegation in the European Parliament was no longer among the smallest delegations in the Socialist Group, PL leader Joseph Muscat said during the European Socialist leaders’ summit in Brussels.
European Socialist Parties leader Poul Nyrup Rasmussen u the European Socialist Group leader Martin Schulz remarked that Malta’s Labour Party’s result was the best acquired by socialist parties in Europe.
Dr Muscat thanked the leaders and pointed out that this was just the point of departure and not the destination.
The summit discussed the results obtained by European socialist parties in the European Parliament elections and the appointment of a European Commission president.
Dr Muscat insisted that the European Socialist Party should use the positive results acquired in Malta, Greece, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and other countries to start showing that it cared more about people than about statistics and bureaucracy.
It was announced during the summit that all Italian MEPs elected on behalf of the Partito Democratico were to join the group.
As a result of Malta’s results, the PL’s delegation in the group was to be bigger than those of Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Luxembourg and Slovenia.
Prior to the approval of the Lisbon Treaty it was to be equal to that of the Netherlands, Ireland and Lithuania.
