Immigrants escape
The police are looking for an unknown number of illegal immigrants who escaped from a detention centre in Safi on Sunday night. Nine of them were quickly rounded up in the vicinity but some managed to get away. The search is being conducted by the Detention Services and the Armed Forces of Malta.

Have a look at http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20090616/tuk-straw-looks-at-tougher-sentences-for-dba1618.html
This shows that the authorities do not even know how many illegal immigrants they have in the detention centres because otherwise they would easily count those remaining and know how many had escaped.
If they don't know how many they have in detention centres, let alone how much they know about those who are roaming around or who may have entered undetected.

So long for Malta being a "safe haven".
You'd be surprised how many potential tourists read the articles in this website, and how many decide not to come to Malta after reading such news. After all, who would want to visit an island with thousands of unknown illegal immigrants roaming the streets?
And please stop calling them IMMIGRANTS! This is an insult to our forefathers who emigrated from Malta en masse with valid documents and an uncertain future on the other side of the world. Those are REAL immigrants, not these illegal, economic migrants!

''Unknown number'' is unacceptable! Smacks too much of Mickey Mouse!

The fact that the number is unknown means that the number of illegal immigrants in Malta is unknown.
Otherwise they would count the number who are still here and they would know how many have escaped.
Moreover, if the place is a detention centre, do they not have a list of how many illegal immigrants are held in the detention centre?
Or is it that they really do not know how many illegal immigrants are held even in the detention centre?
If the authorities do not even know how many illegal immigrants they have in a closed detention centre, no wonder the government has lost control of everything one cares to mention.

I've said it once and will say it again.
Authorities should take a roll-call each and every morning and evening. That way they will know exactly who is missing. The limited "military" discipline would also serve to enforce greater respect for authority. After all, this is not a holiday camp !

"The police are looking for an unknown number of illegal immigrants who escaped from a detention centre in Safi on Sunday night." Now this is some great news, not only illegal immigrants ALWAYS manage to escape but the number of escaped ones is UNKNOWN. Go search for them in Marsa.........maybe you'll be lucky enough to see a few dark skinned ppl roaming about (sarcastically speaking of course!!!). Who ever said "In Office and in Power" must have been dreaming or else he simply does not care about the Maltese citizens. I think the latter applies.

How many illegal immigrants are still on the loose; 1, 50, 100 or do the authorities not know the exact number? Given that the number is "unknown" how do the Police, the Detention Services and the Armed Forces of Malta know who they are looking for.?
