Proponents of the building of an airstrip in Gozo have reiterated their call for a secondary road close to the disused heliport to be widened to become both an airstrip and an ordinary road.

Road works are currently being carried out close to the airstrip in order to facilitate access to the new waste transfer station near Xewkija.

Victor Mercieca, one of the proponents, said one of the nearby roads could be adapted for use as an airstrip and linked to the heliport in a low-cost solution to this long-running controversy.

It is not uncommon for roads to also double as airstrips abroad, subject to proper controls.
