At the start of the New Year, the St Julians local council embarked on a project to resurface the road in St Elias Street, with cobble stones to be consistent with the two other roads in the area i.e. St Angelo Street and Carmel Street - all three roads are known as the "old" part of St Julians. The concept to resurface the road was very good and I am sure that this was welcomed by the residents of St Julians particularly those residing in St Elias Street. However the way the St Julians local council planned this project leaves much to be desired.
The project started at least two months ago - residents had to endure weeks of inconvenience; noise, dust and parking problems. About a month and a half ago the road was temporarily resurfaced but it is still in a dangerous state - both for pedestrians who could easily trip and hurt themselves and for vehicles which are being damaged on a daily basis. Since then the project has been at a standstill and no further works were carried out. Could our mayor explain why this is the case when we were promised that the project would have been completed by the end of June?
To add insult to injury, the local council started road works on Grenfell Street making access into the roads mentioned above practically impossible. I ask our mayor: Why didn't you complete one project before embarking on another?
The situation is ridiculous to say the least. I am not disputing the concept behind the embellishment of our village but the way our local council is operating, particularly when it comes to the co-ordination and planning of projects.
I trust it will look into the matter with urgency to minimise further inconvenience to residents.
