Truck pulls down tree, cables
A truck that was being driven along Old Railway Track in Balzan accidentally pulled down part of a tree and cables which were overhanging the road.
The incident happened at about 1 p.m. No one was injured.
An eyewitness said the cables and the tree appeared to have been snared by a small crane carried on top of the truck.
The tree crashed into a private driveway. A car parked there did not appear to be badly damaged.

Better the tree than the driver. The tree can be replaced but a life no

It is a real pity because it is a majestic fascinating tree. It gives a beautiful lanscaping element to the area and provides excellent shading for the very wide pavement adjacent to it.
However along with the rest of the disasterous town and country planning on this island, this tree was placed far to close to the road and as should have been perceived it's roots are being uprooted and dislevelling the road.
Personally as I live close by, give me a tree like that over a truck/lorry/crane driving on our streets any day!

My question is, should a crane be transported on a lorry? We see them too often on our roads and sometimes the lorry is too small compared to the crane or bulldozer or whatever. Shouldn't this heavy equipment be carried on transporters made for them? Or is it that we are in Malta and anything goes. We also lack info street signs here, but then evenif we had them we still wouldn't notice them. How many times do we see tourists driving at the set speed of 40kms. on an inhabited road and a Maltese driven hooting at the tourist to go faster. We lack education and courtesy in our driving.

sign posts not placed at the right height? a signpost just outside a main shopping complex in attard, triq il-linja is a real joke! A picture of this signpost should be taken maybe the authority responsible for setting it up will take the necessary action to replace it with one at the appropriate height. so many people pass near it, it is a wonder it has not made the news yet.
and regarding the pruning of trees.A corner house located on triq il-linja corner with triq il-kampanella, Attard - awaiting permit for demolition to be replaced with horrendous monstrosity aesthetically unpleasing apartment pigeon hole structure - in the meantime the trees are jutting over the boundary wall onto the street. Who will instruct speculator to cut away the branches??!!!! How many similar buildings are evident which are left to ruins awaiting permit for demolition, or just unhabitable dwellings....a support line should be set up where such situations can be referred to for the necessary action to be taken.

Mr Ray de Bono from where do you suggest these trucks pass? Could it be that most of the signs posts and what not are not properly placed in the right height? As in trees which are not pruned regularly and protude on our roads are extremely dangerous thus most of the truck drivers have to drive in the middle of the road. All Malta needs is more awareness and safety on our roads. Another example are most of the electric cables which are left hanging down awaiting for an accident.

This country has become a sorry joke. There is complete disregard for safety standards.Large trucks are banned from certain residential streets precisely to avoid similar accidents and damage to infrastructure. But with truck drivers might is right. Try stopping them!

@ Callus J
With humidity down to around 27% today, the leaves on a tree would look dry and shriveled quite easily within 30 minutes of being knocked down.
Although there is a certain amount of "driver error" involved where the driver should have been more aware of the extra height of his load, there is also an element or at least a question of possible lack of maintenance in allowing the tree to become a hazard for high loads. Was there any roadside warning or vehicle height restriction for this road?

A truck pulls down this, another truck pulls down another, like expensive sign posts, tunnel markings, light posts, and many irreplaceable trees...and NOTHING HAPPENS.
Why? Can the tree be replaced? We are desperately in need of trees on our quasi-desert island. We cannot go on like this ...will the competent authorities please see that the accident is investigated, and damage involved duly settled? Can the tree be repaired?
What about the eye sores on regional road and other streets with damaged traffic signs? When will these be replaced?

The fallen branch appeared dead to me (with dry leaves) when compared to the rest of the tree, when personally seen this afternoon.
Are you sure that it is not a case of a dead branch falling on a passing truck?
